Fraud happens - but it does not have to happen to you. At First National Bank, we are committed to protecting you and your financial accounts, but we cannot do it alone - we need your help. Here are some tips that can help you prevent fraud, and some insights on how we are doing our part at FNBO.

What You Can Do

Some simple safety precautions can help you prevent fraud from happening to you:

  • Use dark, permanent ink to write checks and never leave the payee or amount lines blank.
  • Always check your bank and credit card statements for suspicious activity - and check with the bank right away if you see something fishy.  Knowing what’s going on with your finances is a great way to know when something isn’t right.
  • Safeguard your checkbook, bank statements and bank cards in a special place in your home.
  • Keep your extra checks somewhere safe, such as in a safe-deposit box.
  • Record your bank and credit card accounts, account numbers and phone numbers. Keep the list in a safe, easily accessible spot so you don’t have to scramble if something goes wrong.
  • Shred cancelled checks, account statements and other financial documents before discarding.
  • Consider using credit, check cards and First National Bank’s Online BillPay as safer alternatives to paper checks.  If you do mail paper checks - send them from the post office, not your home mailbox.
  • If you suspect that your bank or credit card account has been compromised in any way, call the appropriate financial institution immediately so they can help you take action.

How We Are Helping

All First National Bank tellers and branch staff members keep fraud prevention top of mind.  We use the latest fraud detection technology and we get to know our customers personally.

Our tellers and branch personnel may ask customers to show identification during transactions that involve cash or negotiable items.  Not only do we do this because it helps us get to know our customers, but this little step - which takes just 10 to 15 seconds, but is one of the best ways to prevent fraud.

What is the latest fraud detection technology that First National Uses?

Naming what specific fraud prevention technology First National Bank uses would be a security risk in itself. However, we use a variety of fraud monitoring and detection systems that monitor historical activity, industry trends and other red flags. The rules, parameters, thresholds and profiles of these systems are constantly updated to adapt to the changing fraud threats and to be sure our investigators have the best tools available to them. We also work closely with law enforcement officials and other financial transaction processors to be sure we are sharing information about the most recent trends.

What does First National do with it's computers and hard drives that are ouf of service to protect consumer information?

Protecting customer privacy is a priority at First National Bank. All hard drives at the end of their useful life or that are out of service are destroyed by First National. We do not recycle or donate any data storage devices.
