07.27.2009 / Beautiful Weather and Beautiful Competition.
The weather in Omaha was beautiful this past weekend, making it the perfect setting for both the players and the crowds at the Cox Classic. Looking back, the competition at the tournament was just as great.
Finishing the tournament at 20-under par, the 11-year pro, Rich Barcelo, took home the trophy on Sunday. Battling tennis elbow, Barcelo's winning streak started at the 14th hole when his 25-foot birdie broke a three-way tie with Jonas Blixt and JJ Killeen. Another birdie on the 15th hole put him at 19 under followed by yet another on the 17th.
Late-in-the-game birdies also fared well for runner-up Tom Gillis, who is likely to get his card to compete in the PGA Tour in August.
Things didn't turn out as great for Michael Sim, who (as we mentioned on Thursday) was ranked No. 1 on the money list. While Sim correctly predicted that the winner would be 20 under, unfortunately - it was not him. Even though he didn't get automatic entry to the PGA Tour, his tie for fifth place did bring his season total to $414,579 - the seventh best single season money total in Tour history.
