11.20.2009 / The Battle for the Big 12 North. Posting by Greg Sharpe, The Voice of the Huskers
On Saturday the Cornhuskers won their fourth straight road Big 12 game for the first time in a decade. The win over Kansas sets up a game to decide the champions of the Big 12 North with Kansas State.
The Huskers rediscovered their offense against the Jayhawks, piling up over 400 yards and putting 31 points on the board. That is a welcome site to Husker fans who have watched that unit struggle in recent weeks.
It’s not by accident that the offense has come alive with Roy Helu getting healthy. The talented junior running back has now posted back–to–back 100 yard rushing games against Oklahoma and Kansas.
The Huskers were the pick to win the North, but Kansas State was not even expected to be close. The Wildcats under Bill Snyder have been the biggest surprise team in the league. The Cats have won four conference games and have put themselves in position to win the division crown with a win Saturday over the Huskers.
K–State has used a strong rushing attack and a solid defense to post six wins this year. The Cats have the league’s top rusher in junior back Daniel Thomas and an explosive kick returner in Brandon Banks to spark their offense.
Nebraska will have to take care of the ball and continue to play solid defense in order to win this game and earn a spot in the Big 12 title game. The Huskers are the better team but they should be prepared to get K–State’s best shot.
Go Big Red!
