10.23.2009 / Opera for Everyone. Posting by Tinamarie, FNBO Employee.
Opera for Everyone is the catchphrase that Opera Omaha has used in their production of Pagliacci by Leoncavallo and they were right on the mark! Pagliacci (Players or Clowns) is a fast-paced, emotional opera consisting of a prologue and two acts written and composed in 1892 by Ruggero Leoncavallo. Real life and fiction collide as husband; wife and her lover are embroiled in love, betrayal and murder.
A little opera trivia... What was history’s first million-selling record? It was tenor Enrico Caruso’s 1907 recording of “Vesti la Giubba” – from Pagliacci! When Canio, played by Tonio DiPaolo, sang this aria with such passion, many audience members were wiping away tears... including me.
An interesting twist was the casting of married couple Kelly Kaduce and Lee Gregory as Nedda and her lover Silvio. Their voices not only blended beautifully, but their scenes together radiated true love.
This was my husband’s and my first experience attending an opera with English sub-titles, and I was worried that this would be distracting. We were pleasantly surprised how well Opera Omaha had positioned these sets and how enjoyable it was to interpret the opera verse by verse.
Not only was First National a sponsor, but First National’s own Eduardo Millan sang in the chorus. A member of Merchant Training and Development, Eduardo has sung in over 20 productions for Opera Omaha.
Opera Omaha’s next production in November is Brundibar, in collaboration with the Institute for Holocaust Education followed by the Marriage of Figaro in February. Visit www.operaomaha.org for additional information regarding upcoming performances.
