09.10.2009 / ONE DOWN 11 TO GO! Posting by Greg Sharpe, Voice of the Huskers
The Huskers started off the 2009 season with a solid 49-3 win over Florida Atlantic. Zac Lee played well in his debut as the Nebraska starting quarterback. Roy Helu showed again that he is one of the top running backs in the Big 12. The defense had a bend but don't break mentality and any time you hold an opponent out of the end zone you've had a good night.
But that was last week. It's now on to the Red Wolves of Arkansas State. This is another team from the Sun Belt Conference that won their opener 61-0. Granted it was Mississippi Valley State but still to win by that margin should tell you something. The Red Wolves have an experienced quarterback in Corey Leonard and a 1000 yard rusher from last season in Reggie Arnold. Defensively this team is a step up from Florida Atlantic. They return eight starters from last seasons 6-6 squad which included a win at Texas A&M. One of those returning starters is defensive end Alex Carrington who was the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year last season.
This is another game in which Nebraska is the more talented team and the challenge this week is to bring the same intensity that the Big Red had last week. Gone will be the opening game hype and the night game atmosphere. Also Nebraska has to fight the temptation to look ahead to Virginia Tech next week. I expect a closer game than week one but a Husker win!
GO BIG RED!
