Hey Husker fans! This is Zack Bowman. I'm a former Husker, from 2005-2007, Blackshirt Cornerback and was a team captain in 2007. I was drafted to the Chicago Bears in the 2008 NFL Draft and will be contributing to the First National Bank blog before several Husker games this fall.
Finally, college football season is here! I was able to see the Huskers take on Florida Atlantic on television here in Chicago and was pumped up to see the Huskers dominating again. The offense looked good with Zac Lee leading the way. Roy Helu also had a great game. He’s developing into a quality back for the Huskers. The defense was electrifying! Watching some of my former teammates like Suh, Turner, Asante, West and O’Hanlon making big plays out there really got me excited at what they might accomplish this year.
My Husker experience was amazing! If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing about becoming a Husker. Just being around the tradition and the fans gave me memories I will always have. I tell my Bears’ teammates that they haven’t experienced an atmosphere like Nebraska’s. My fondest memory about the game day experience is the tunnel walk. It still gives me goose bumps when I think about it!
I was a co-team captain my senior year in 2007 along with Bo Ruud and Brett Byford. My responsibility as a Husker captain was to listen to my teammates and be able to express to the coaches how they felt. I was also there to help the younger guys get their feet on the ground and to try to keep everybody working together as a team.
I’m very excited going into my second season with the Chicago Bears. We have a very talented team this year, including former Husker, Josh Bullocks. During my first season, I was able to get an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in my first game as a Bear. This season, I’m hoping to make more big plays (so I can throw up the bones!) and continue to learn. I’m looking forward to another opportunity to go out there and do my best!
This week the Huskers take on Arkansas State. I’ve heard they have a potent rushing attack and some weapons on offense, especially at the quarterback and runningback positions. I know the Sunbelt Conference doesn’t get a lot of respect from the national media but it seems like every year they upset one or two BCS conference teams. I’d like to see someone on the defense step up and make a game-changing play this week to make sure we get the win. The second game of my senior season we were playing at Wake Forest and I was fortunate enough to make an interception that helped us win. It was an awesome feeling being able to contribute like that. Look for Suh, Asante or one of the young play-makers to step up big this week. Talk to you guys soon…Go Big Red!
