12.02.2010 / How Fitting that the Big 12 Championship comes down to NU vs. OU. Posting by Greg Sharpe, The Voice of the Huskers
It is only fitting that it is Nebraska versus Oklahoma in the final Big 12 Championship Game. These two long time rivals had their annual match ripped away when the league was formed. For more than two decades the NU-OU Game was among the most important every season and for one final time it will determine a conference champ.
The Sooners have been lighting up the scoreboard like a pinball machine. OU won a track meet last Saturday over Oklahoma State to clinch the south title. The Sooners have an all conference wide receiver in Ryan Broyles who has caught 115 passes on the year. That’s not a misprint it is 115. To put that in perspective that would rank him number four on Nebraska’s all-time receptions chart, for a career!
Running back DeMarco Murray is also an all-conference selection. Murray is a threat both running and catching the football. The signal caller for the Sooners is Landry Jones. The sophomore quarterback has played well this year but Husker fans will remember the Blackshirts picking him off five times a year ago.
The Sooners will test the Huskers but this game will come down to how well Nebraska moves the ball against the OU defense. To answer that question it might depend on the quarterback situation for the Huskers. Taylor Martinez is practicing but doesn’t appear to be back to full strength. Cody Green looked good last week and gained confidence against the Buffaloes. This will be a tough decision for the coaching staff. Taylor is the number one guy but if he is not full strength would it be better to go with Green?
We probably won’t know until kickoff Saturday night and the play at that position could well decide the winner of this year’s Big 12 title. I love how the Blackshirts are playing and the old saying is that defense wins championships. Let’s hope so. Go Big Red!!
