06.14.2010 / Staycation Part 2
So you have decided to take a staycation and you are going to stay around Omaha. What should you do? We have compiled some great local venues for kids, for adults and for the whole family.
Ideas for kids
The following Omaha attractions are great for kids!
- The Rose Theater (rosetheater.org) has plays, music and dance for kids of all ages! This summer, the Rose Theater will be showing “Disney’s High School Musical 2” and also has summer camps for children interested in the arts!
- The Omaha Children’s Museum (ocm.org) provides year-round fun for kids. Summers, however, bring longer hours and a new exhibit - Adventures with Clifford, the Big Red Dog! Kids can explore permanent exhibits too, including the outdoor “Sandy’s Splish Splash Playground” that’s perfect for warm days!
Fun for the whole family!
While kids enjoy these local places, they are fun for the whole family!
- Lauritzen Gardens (omahabotanicalgardens.org) also provides year round fun for the whole family, but summer brings a special time at the Gardens. Monday and Tuesday nights the Gardens are open until 8 pm for “Garden Twilight” from May until September – enjoy a late stroll in the Gardens!
- The Henry Doorly Zoo (henrydooryzoo.com) is always a popular family destination, and this year, Expedition Madagascar – the new exhibit showcasing the wildlife of Madagascar – is bound to excite your family. If you’re in for a more Midwest-style adventure, check out the Wildlife Safari (http://www.omahazoo.com/index.php?p=animalsexhibits&s=wildlifesafari), located off Nebraska’s I-80, Exit 426. The Safari is run by the zoo and gives your family a Safari like experience with North American wildlife, including bison and elk!
- Mahoney State Park (www.ngpc.state.ne.us) offers many activities for family fun. In addition to offering a vacation spot for out of towners or staycationers looking to get out of the house for a few days, Mahoney also has a water park, hiking trails, miniature golf and horseback trail rides! There is also a year-round activity center available if you take your staycation during colder months!
For Adults
Check out these options for a staycation date night!
- Film Streams (http://www.filmstreams.org/) offers first run and classic reparatory films all year round, but can add some variety to date night – and something different from what’s at the standard multiplex!
- Trip Advisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g60885-Omaha_Nebraska.html)if you’re looking for a restaurant. Trip Advisor has restaurant reviews for local restaurants for tourists and visitors alike.
