04.11.2011 / Keeping your Information Safe on Social Networking
We all know that we need to be safe with our personal information on email, be careful about who we open up attachments from, and make sure that the person or company we thought emailed us something is the real thing and not a phishing scam. But what about Social Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn?
Essentially, the same rules – and common sense – apply to email, web surfing and Social Networking. However, if you’re new to Social Networking sites, here are a few guidelines to follow:
- Just because you CAN share information, doesn’t mean you should!
LinkedIn and Facebook, for example, both offer the option of sharing your phone number, email and your address. If you use these sites to network for work, sharing your email can be ok, but never share your phone number or address. - Posting on a company’s Facebook page or sending them a Twitter message is not private, so do not share your account information or provide items like addresses or phone numbers.
- Make sure if you “friend” someone on Facebook or LinkedIn – which means letting them see your information, updates and other information – that you really know them.
Also remember that First National will never ask you for account information via email, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.
