08.31.2011 / The long wait is over for Husker fans as Nebraska kicks off their season this weekend. Posting by Greg Sharpe, The Voice of the Huskers.
The long summer is over for Husker fans! Kickoff is Saturday for the Big Red. It seems like two years ago that it was announced that Nebraska was headed to the Big 10. Finally we have arrived at the time when the Huskers can take the field as a Big 10 team.
The August camp is over and the Huskers managed to navigate the grueling practice sessions without losing a starter for the season to injury. The lone member of the two deep that is questionable for the opener is cornerback Alfonzo Dennard.
The Blackshirts are loaded again this season with an All-American at every level. Jared Crick along the defensive line, Lavonte David at linebacker and Dennard in the secondary have all garnered preseason honors. The group will be tested Saturday by Tennessee Chattanooga’s quarterback B.J. Coleman who is on the Walter Payton list as the top offensive player in the FCS. Coleman has an All-American to throw to in senior wideout Joel Bradford. The 6-0 senior hauled in 81 catches a year ago.
The Mocs defense allowed over 30 points per game last season and is small up front. The Mocs defensive line only averages 246 lbs. per man. That will give the Big Red’s offensive line a big size advantage.
Look for Nebraska to establish the run game earlier in this contest and then mix in some play action. You will notice NU using some no-huddle and limiting the time between snaps in this contest as well. There is a reason that the Huskers are 35 point favorites in this game and by the end of the day the Big Red should have a comfortable win to start the season off.
So welcome to the Big 10 Husker fans and Go Big Red!
