01.20.2012 / Finals Week is Finally Over. Posting by Brian Kooienga, Creighton Mens Basketball Graduate Manager

As the clever title suggests (trust me I am well aware the title is not that clever), the fall semester has finally come to a close and our players have finished taking all of their finals. While finals week is something that we all know is coming and should be something you can plan for, with 18 players, 5 classes each, and varying practice times and workout schedules on top of all the academic stress involved, it is quite the relief when Friday afternoon rolls around. The good news is that we were able to not only give the players some time off to rest their legs and prepare for the marathon that is conference play, but we were also able to get tons of study time and tutor sessions in so we can continue our pursuit of success in the classroom.

"The next 10 days should give a great insight as to where we are at as a program and where we are in regards to our goals for the season."

The next 10 days should give a great insight as to where we are at as a program and where we are in regards to our goals for the season.  We play a talented Houston Baptist team that is coming off of a big win over the same Campbell team that played us at home just a few weeks ago.  Following the Houston Baptist game, we will pack up and take to the road to play a very talented Tulsa team.  Our trip to play the Golden Hurricanes should be a great measuring tool being as they have already played Saint Joe’s (our only loss), Northwestern (our game after them), and then they have already played (and lost to two of our conference rivals, Wichita State and Missouri State). After the Tulsa game, we come back home to close out our non-conference schedule against the talented team from Chicago, the Wildcats of Northwestern University.

If we find ourselves sitting with a 10-1 record heading home for the holidays, that would be a strong testament to the hard work that our guys have put in in the off season as well as their ability to compete in hostile road environments.  With last year’s road woes and trouble finishing games away from the CenturyLink, this team has already shown that there is a willingness to compete and fight when the chips are stacked against us and things aren’t going our way.

With what appears to be the second to last blog posting of 2011, I want to encourage everyone to come out to the games not only against Houston Baptist, but also Northwestern as they appear to be a dominant force in the Big Ten Conference this year and will compete for an NCAA at large bid.

Hope to see you all Saturday and Thursday!
