Planning ahead is the key to keeping your holiday travel affordable. The holiday season, from Thanksgiving to New Years is among the busiest long distance travel periods of the year. Meaning demand and price for travel goes up.

"From booking flights to planning meals- there are ways for you to save"

From booking flights to planning meals, there are ways for you to save. To ease the financial burden of traveling this year for your family, consider the following tips:

Book Early: The earlier you make your travel plans, the less stressful and more cost-effective the process will be. Some airfares may even offer refunds if the airfare drops before the holiday times. Consider booking a package deal including flights, rental cars and hotel rooms for additional savings.

Avoid Peak Travel Days and Times: Travel the week before or after Christmas to avoid overall higher airfares and hotel rates, and possibly even holiday surcharges on specific peak dates. Book flights either early or late in the day. This will not only save you money, but will also save you time waiting in the check-in and security lines.

Pack Wisely: Travel lightly and only pack a carry-on bag, if possible. Most airlines charge fees for each checked bag. If you do need to check your luggage, make sure to stay under your airline’s baggage weight limit to avoid additional fees. Do not gift wrap your gifts before you arrive at your destination. Even if you check the gifts, there is still a chance your luggage will be inspected by the TSA and the packages will be unwrapped.

Save on Meals: If you will be eating out during your vacation, do your research and plan ahead. Enjoy an early dinner and take advantage of happy hour food specials. Research restaurants that have “Kids Eat Free” nights. Consider ordering an appetizer and sharing an entrée with your dining partner instead of ordering your own.

Use Mobile Technology: There are many travel apps available to help you save money. Save on gas by using the free app Gas Buddy to compare nearby gas prices. Many travel sites including Travelocity, Orbitz and Expedia also have apps to help you book the best travel deals.

Your time spent during the holidays should be focused on your family and friends. Planning and budgeting ahead of time can save you money.
