01.31.2011 / The Misfits are Coming to The Rose Theater
The Misfits will fit right in at The Rose Theater, February 3 to 13, 2011. The inspiring original stage adaptation written by Brian Guehring based on the book by James Howe will entertain, engage and empower young people. The Misfits addresses issues of bullying much like those that have been evidenced in recent news headlines.
The production focuses on four seventh-graders who find strength to stand up to their peers. Bullied for years about their weight, intelligence, sexual orientation and troubled nature, the “misfits” have decided that enough is enough! Together, they run for student council on the platform of “change” and their goal to put an end to name-calling results in more than they could have imagined.
“Middle school is a time when we have so much self-doubt about our differences,” said
Director Stephanie Jacobson, “But this play allows us to watch the characters develop an outstanding amount of confidence. They show that there are things in life that are worth fighting for and learn that they can always turn to others for support.”
Rose Theater Playwright-in-Residence Brian Guehring has adapted James Howe’s well-known book for the stage. “Howe’s dialogue is funny, quirky and real; and his characters are well-drawn and memorable,” said Guehring. “It is a great fit for the stage because everyone in the audience can relate to one of the four main characters! I have worked hard to honor the wonderful book and hope Misfits fans will enjoy seeing their favorite parts. I am confident that audience members who are unfamiliar with the book will also like this powerful story.”
Upon reading the script, Howe himself described the production, in the words of Joe Bunch (one of the misfits), as “Fab. U. Luss!!!!”
The Misfits is recommended for children ages 10 and up because it contains situations and themes that may warrant conversation with adults after the show.
The Misfits will be presented at The Rose February 3rd - 13th. For more information, visit www.rosetheater.org or call (402) 345-4849. Rose members receive four free tickets to the show.
