11.21.2011 / Join the Holiday Magic at Union Station.
Do you love getting into the holiday spirit? So does The Durham Museum! This year they continue a longstanding tradition, Christmas at Union Station, that goes back to the 1930s. Combining festive decorations, the regions largest indoor Christmas tree and many family friendly events, Christmas at Union Station is one of the longstanding holiday traditions in the city.
The Durham has many activities planned between Thanksgiving and New Years – so many, we can’t list them all! However, below are five that we highly recommended checking out:
- The Tree Lighting Ceremony opens the holiday season. Join the Durham on Friday, November 25th from 4-7 pm as they light the region’s largest indoor Christmas tree. A highlight of this year’s celebration is a performance by jazz singer Camille Metoyer Moten, who will be performing many holiday favorites. Families can also decorate cookies, make holiday crafts and more!
- The Ethnic Holiday Festival, held every year, is a great way to learn about the holiday traditions of different cultures. Local cultural organizations bring food, exhibits and performances to the Durham. Eat a favorite traditional dish, get a hard to find gift and watch musicians and dancers perform throughout the evening. This year’s festival will be held on December 2nd from 5 – 9 pm.
- Family Nights with Santa – On Tuesday December 6th, 13th and 20th, from 5-8 pm, families will be able to visit with Santa, enjoy live musical performances and make holiday crafts!
- Winter Camp – Winter Camp at the Durham is held from December 26th – 30th for kids on holiday break. This year’s camp features the Cut! Costume and the Cinema exhibit. Campers will see costumes from characters such as Jack Sparrow, Jane Eyre, and Sherlock Holmes while experiencing a day in the life of a pirate, solving a museum mystery, and learning about beloved fairytales. Campers can sign up for individual days or the full week.
- Noon Year’s Eve Celebration – Midnight too late for some members of your family? The Durham Museum’s Noon Year’s Eve Celebration is perfect for you. Children will enjoy this party with music by Dino O’Dell, special crafts, a celebratory bubble wrap stomp and a ball drop! The fun takes place on Saturday, December 31st from 10 am – 1 pm!
