Where can you see what your favorite stars wore in Pirates of the Caribbean, Phantom of the Opera and Sense and Sensibility? At the Durham Museums new exhibit CUT! Costume and the Cinema at The Durham Museum until April 29, 2012.
CUT! pays tribute to five centuries of fashion and style by showcasing costumes from historical Hollywood films. At CUT! you will see 43 period costumes, created by and borrowed from the London costume house of Cosprop, Ltd. Cosprop’s designers have won Academy Awards for costumes in movies like A Room with a View and The Duchess, and have worked on many award winning period films. In 2008, three of the five Oscar nominees included Cosprop designs.
In addition to the exhibit, the Durham is celebrating with some wonderful programming inspired by the movies and fashion in the exhibit.
- First up is Pirate Day on January 21st from 10 am – 3 pm. Visitors will enjoy a special movie presentation, help find buried treasure and make pirate hats in this celebration of everything pirates!
- The CUT! Tea and Tour is on February 12th and April 15th. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour of CUT! Costume and the Cinema followed by a lesson on the etiquette of afternoon tea.
- The Durham Reading Club will be discussing books on which some of the movies in the exhibit were based – A Farewell to Arms on January 28th, Phantom of the Opera on February 25th, and Jane Eyre on March 31st.
- On March 20th there will be Mayhem at the Museum! Visitors can help Sherlock Holmes solve “The Case of the Missing Gold Medallion” with storytelling, CSI Stations and “unexplained” soda fountain specials!
- The Art of Costume Design Presentation and Fashion Show is on March 24th and a presentation called “A Century of Fashion” is on April 10th. If you love fashion and history, these two presentations are for you!
